We developed a comprehensive IoT ecosystem for Velocity, connecting premium electric bikes to a high-performance mobile app via Bluetooth LE, providing riders with unprecedented control and data insights.
Velocity's high-end eBikes lacked a digital interface that matched their hardware's sophistication. They needed a solution that could handle real-time data transmission from the bike's motor and battery sensors without draining the user's phone battery or suffering from connectivity lag.
The primary hurdle was the complex Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) handshake protocol required to maintain a secure, always-on connection while the rider is in motion, often through areas with high electromagnetic interference.
Synerge engineered a custom BLE communication layer using React Native, optimized for low-latency data packets. We implemented a robust state management system that caches ride data locally and syncs with the cloud only when a stable connection is detected, ensuring no data loss.
The UI was designed for "glanceability"—high contrast, large typography, and simplified navigation to ensure rider safety. We also integrated a social module that allows users to join local "ride groups" and compete on eco-leaderboards, driving user engagement.
Our team implemented a hardware-abstraction layer that allows the app to communicate with multiple motor controller versions (Bosch, Bafang, and Shimano) through a unified API. We also developed an AI-driven range estimator that considers terrain elevation and rider weight to provide highly accurate "distance-to-empty" forecasts.
For security, we integrated a digital lock feature that disables the motor if the paired phone is not within 2 meters of the bike, effectively acting as a powerful theft deterrent.
